Pacific Storm Pattern to Return the Week of January 5th, 2026

(IntegrityWeather.com) — Not a normal La Nina for January 2026.

As we kick off the month, a ridge of high pressure will be in control over the west CONUS with a trough in the east.

This feature will be replaced by troughing during the first week of the month which will support an active subtropical jet with storm systems traversing the central/southern plains.

While most of the storm fronts will target the Ohio Valley region, at least one of these is likely to clip portions of the Midwest during the week of January 5th.

This pattern will likely drive both severe and winter weather threats during the period with cold dry air focused on the far northern plains.
